Prerequisite(s): Foreign Tax 1.
Corequisite(s): Tax Treaties.
In this seven-week course, teams are formed consisting of two foreign students and one U.S. student from the Graduate Tax Program. Each team is given a case study which relates to a proposed multi-country business transaction involving at least the three countries represented on the team. Each team member conducts original research and prepares two memoranda which analyze the relevant law and proposes the most tax-efficient method by which the transaction should proceed. Each team is assisted by a New York University faculty member and a visiting foreign professor. In addition, each team has a Practicing Attorney Advisor who is an international tax lawyer from a New York firm. Each Advisor meets with his or her team once during the case study to review work and provide suggestions to the team. While the focus of the case study is on tax issues, it also includes corporate law and accounting matters.
