Current Awareness Services

Current awareness services are available to help members of the law school community stay current in their areas of interest.  They provide the following:

Journal, database & newspaper alerts - researchers receive an email showing the Table of Contents for new issues of journals or newspapers or highlights  from online databases as they are published

Search alerts - researchers compose a search (for example, Sarbanes-Oxley, homeland security, etc.), and receive an email when a journal or highlight from an online database is published which satisfies the search)

BNA provides over 100 different email alerts to law faculty and students in all subjects - antitrust, banking, bankruptcy, criminal, environmental, family law, international trade, labor, taxation, to name a few.

Set up an email alert


Business Source Premier

Business Source Premier is a full text database for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including 1000 peer-reviewed business publication.  Its full text coverage goes back to 1922 for more than 300 of the top scholarly journals. To activate email alerts to new articles:

To create an account
Go to Business Source Premier
Click Continue
Click "Sign In To My Ebscohost"
Click "I'm a new user"
Fill in all required fields to create your new account
Click OK

To set up a journal alert
Click on Publications near the top of the page
Enter words in the search box, or browse the title lists for publications of interest
Click on the publication title link
Click on Journal Alert in the upper right
Fill in relevant information, and click Save
Repeat for each journal for which you wish to receive an email alert

To set up a search alert
Select the Advanced Search tab
Do a search
Select the Search History/Alerts tab again
Put a check mark in the "Add to search" box
Click Save Searches/Alerts
Click the Alert button in the "Save search as" box
Give the alert a name, fill in all required information,  and click "Save"

Cambridge Journals Online

To create an account
Go to Cambridge Journals Online
Click Register, fill in information, click Submit

To set up a journal alert
Go to Cambridge Journals Online
Click Log-in
Browse Journals until you have one on the screen
When viewing a journal title on CJO, click "New Content Email Alerts"
Click "Journals of Interest" in the Content Alerts section
Check the journal(s) for which you want alerts
Click Submit

To set up a search alert
Go to Cambridge Journals Online
Click Log-in
Browse Journals until you have one on the screen
When viewing a journal title on CJO, click "New Content Email Alerts"
Click "Advanced Search" in the Periodic Searches section
Enter search terms and click Submit

Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP)  

CILP (https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://cilp.nellco.org) provides timely topical access to approximately 500 law school reviews and other selected legal journals under 100 subject headings. It is not an email alerting service, but a web service that updates weekly, and  displays Tables of Contents for issues received by the University of Washington Law Library that week.   CILP is available 4-6 weeks before commercial legal periodicals indexes such as the Index to Legal Periodicals and the Legal Resource Index

You can view CILP in HTML, MS Word or pdf format.   The HTML version places a Lexis and Westlaw link next to each article citation (you will be prompted for your password), so you can easily view the article.

CILP has an email alerting component, called SmartCilp (see below).

Haworth Press

To create an account

Click "Table of Contents Email Alerting Service" in the right-hand column
Click "Click here to continue to set up your profile", and "Click here" again
Enter email address and choose a password

To set up a journal alert
Go to any Haworth Press journal page, either by going to  https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://www.haworthpress.com/store/E-Text/viewlibraryetext.asp  or doing a Journal Title search
Click "Table of Contents Email Alerting Service" in the right-hand column
Click "Click here to continue", and "Click here" again
Enter email address and password, Sign-In
Check off desired journals, "Finish and view my selections"
Check "Done and continue browsing"

IngentaConnect  Alerts

IngentaConnect is a database of over 27,000 publications, more than 6,000 of them full text.  You can receive email alerts when either new issues of online journals become available, or when search results for specific articles that meet your search criteria are met.

Register on the Ingenta website
Go to https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://www.ingentaconnect.com
Click on Register
Click on Personal
Fill in all required information (Make sure the box requesting full-text access to your institution's subscriptions is checked)
Click Continue

Create a new alerting profile for e-journal alerts
Click My E-journal Alerts
Click Create a new alerting profile (you can use the same password you used when you registered at the Ingenta website)
Locate e-journals by entering words in the search box, or browsing through the title lists
Check the boxes next to the titles you want to receive alerts about
Click Update Alerts

Create a search alert
Do a search in online articles (do not choose fax/ariel articles, or a charge will be imposed)
Select Saved searches
Check the box next to the search you just performed, and click "Add to Alerts"

Kluwer Journals Online

Create a new alerting profile & setting up journal alerts
Go to https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://www.kluweralert.com
Enter email address, Login. 
You will be directed to the Profile page. Fill in required information, click "Save and continue".
You will be directed to the New Product Announcement  page. Fill in required information, or don't, and click "Save and continue".
You will be directed to the Journal Table of Contents page. Select the journals for which you would like to receive alerts, and  click "Save and continue".

Law Review Title Pages

Once a week, the Law Library circulates to faculty photocopies of the title pages of all law reviews/journals that have been received by the library. Faculty can browse the title pages at their convenience. Copies of articles can be obtained via LEXIS or WESTLAW, or may be requested by submitting a Faculty Services Request form to the library (an electronic version of the form is available on the Law Library Web Cite). Go to the Legal Scholarship Repository at  http://lsr.nellco.org
Click "My Account" on the left side of the page
Click "Create a Free Account" and follow all prompts

To set up a journal alert
Go to the Legal Scholarship Repository at  http://lsr.nellco.org
Click "Customized Email Alerts by Subject Area"
Check off Subject Boxes, then click "Notify Me of New Content"
Login when prompted

Note: LSR Alerts are for articles in legal subject areas, not for specific journals

Go to MetaPress
Click "Alerting"in column on left
Click "Register", enter information, OK
A MetaPress ID will be emailed to you, along with the UserID and Password you created

Please note: Proquest alerts only include the first 10 articles in an issue.  If a journal is provided by a source other than Proquest, use that source instead.

To set up a journal alert
Go to any Proquest journal page, either by doing a search at https://ezproxy.library.nyu.edu/login?url=http://www.umi.com/pqdauto , or doing a Journal Title search
Click "Set up an alert", enter required information, and click "Save"
You will receive an email confirmation of your alert.  You MUST use the confirmation link within this email in order to activate the alerting service.
Save the email, because it contains instructions on how to discontinue receiving the alerts

ResearchNow allows you to Search or Browse through the quasi-open access Berkeley Electronic Press journals, plus a wealth of unrestricted working paper series, preprints monographs, and other content from institutional and subject-matter repositories hosted by bepress, including New York University Law and Economics Working Papers and  New York University Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

    From any Sage journal homepage, click on "Sign up for Sage Content Alerts"

    Social Science Research Network (SSRN) is devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences.

    Westclip and ECLIPSE are Westlaw's and Lexis's  alerting services,  for law reviews, cases, legislation, news, etc.  Any search of their databases can be saved and searched for future research sessions.
